    Bruce Mayes was born on the 1st of May 1903 in Toowoomba, Queensland. He was the son of Alexander Mayes (Mayor of Toowoomba) and was educated at Toowoomba Grammar School. Bruce studied medicine at the University of Sydney and graduated with first class honours.

     

    Throughout the 1930’s Bruce held numerous positions within the medical field and in 1940 was appointed to the chair of obstetrics at the University of Sydney. He became a consultant at the Royal Hospital for Women and the Women’s Hospital.

     

    On the 12th of April 1939 Bruce joined the Australian Army Medical Corps (Militia) and was appointed as a supernumerary Captain, however in WW2 he joined the Medical Branch of the Royal Australian Air Force. He was allocated service number 264848 and served in Sydney from March 1942 as a Flight Lieutenant at No. 2 Recruiting Centre and then No.2 Training Group. In 1943 at the request of Sydney University, Bruce transferred to the RAAF reserve and continued as a part-time consultant.

     

    On the 25th of February 1947 Bruce was awarded the Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order as an Honorary Surgeon to the Duke of Gloucester. On the 14th of June 1969 he was awarded the Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St George for his services to Medicine. He died on the 2nd of December 1996.
