Christopher Wood was born about 1893 in London, England. He emigrated to Australia on the 17th of April 1913 and was working as a Printer in Richmond, Victoria when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 12th of January 1915. He was allocated service number 4628, however was discharged at the Depot Medically Unfit (Venereal) on the 16th of March 1915.
Christopher re-attested on the 20th of July 1915, however his movements are difficult to follow. There is a note on his paperwork listing him as a “Deserter” and there is correspondence for a warrant for his arrest mentioning that he “escaped form detention.” He did however, re-attest again on the 19th of May 1916 and was allocated service number 6627. He embarked from Melbourne on the 2nd of October 1916 with the 21st Reinforcements, 8th Battalion.
Christopher disembarked at Plymouth on the 16th of November 1916 and proceeded overseas to France on the 15th of March 1917. On the 26th of April 1917 he was taken on strength with the 8th Battalion. He was Wounded in Action (S.W right arm) at Broodseinde on the 4th of October 1917 and was Killed in Action at Nieppe Forest near Hazebrouck on the 14th of April 1918. An eye witness states “I saw him killed outright by a piece of shell which, I think, hit him on the forehead….”
He now rests in the Nieppe-Bois British Cemetery, France.
