    Record of Service: 

     

    George Vinge was born on the 23rd of June 1891 in Goorambat, Victoria. He was working as a Blacksmith when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 9th of October 1914. George was allocated service number 2744 and embarked from Melbourne with the 1st Divisional Train Reinforcements on the 22nd of December 1914. 

     

    George joined the 3rd Company AASC and proceeded to join the M.E.F, Gallipoli on the 5th of April 1915. Returning to Alexandria following the landing at Gallipoli George proceeded to join the Western Frontier Force at Matruh on the 5th of December 1915.  (The Western Frontier Force was organised to respond to threats from the Senussi tribes in the Western Desert).  

     

    On the 19th of March 1916 George transferred to the 5th Australian Divisional Train and on the 4th of April 1916 was taken on strength with the 47th Battalion. On the 12th of July 1916 he was admitted to hospital with a fractured Patella.  

     

    He returned to Australia on the 17th of October 1916 and was charged with resisting and assaulting an MP whilst aboard the ship. He was discharged M.U from the 3 M.D on the 19th of January 1917. He died on the 16th of September 1951.
