Thomas Jeffery was born about 1890 in St. Poles, Midlothian, Scotland. He attested for the British Army (Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery) on the 9th of April 1908, was allocated service number 50342 and joined No.3 Depot R.F.A.
On the 26th of June 1908 Thomas was posted to the 136th Battery, R.F.A and on the 5th of January 1910 was posted abroad to India where he joined the 64th Battery R.F.A. On the 24th of November 1912 he was promoted to A/Bombardier and on the 19th of August 1914 was posted to the 73rd Battery R.F.A.
Thomas served with the 5th Brigade, R.F.A in France from the 17th of October 1914 and his M.I.C shows his Qualifying Date as the 6th of November 1914. Thomas returned to the U.K on the 14th of February 1915, where he served at home until the 25th of September 1915. He then returned to France where he served with the 112th (Howitzer) Brigade until the 26th of May 1919.
While serving in France Thomas was promoted to Sergeant on the 25th of March 1917 and to W.O Class II (B.S.M) on the 14th of October 1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal while serving as a Sergeant with “D” Battery, 112th Brigade.
His Citation: “From 25th February to 17th September, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty in action consistently. His conduct was most conspicuous on the Aisne.”
Thomas survived the war and discharged from the army with the rank of Sergeant on the 11th of September 1920. For his service during WW1 he is entitled to the 1914 Star & Clasp, British War and Victory Medals.
