Additional Information
Record of Service:
Christopher Mahony was born about 1888 in Katamatite, Victoria. He was living in Sydney and working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 23rd of May 1916.
Allocated service number 1691, Christopher embarked from Sydney on the 15th of December 1916 with the Camel Corps reinforcements. He disembarked at Suez on the 19th of January 1917 and was taken on strength with the 4th Light Horse Regiment on the 6th of March 1917.
Christopher was on strength with the Regiment when the 4th Light Horse charged at Beersheba on the 31st of October 1917. He is noted in Neil Smith’s “Men of Beersheba” as a possible charger. (Most participants are listed as “possible” because there is no confirmed roll of men who took part in the charge, however upon examining Christopher’s service dossier, there is no reason why he would not have charged.)
Following Beersheba, the 4th Light Horse Regiment moved into the Jordan Valley and participated in the Es Salt Raid (29th of April - 4th of May 1918), Christopher was Wounded in Action (gunshot wound right arm) on the 4th of May 1918.
Recovering from his wounds, Christopher re-joined the Regiment on the 15th of June 1918 and returned to Australia on the 15th of June 1919.
