George Mitchell was born about 1894 in Burra, South Australia. He was working as a Printer when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 12th of January 1916. He was allocated service number 139 and was an original member of A Company, 44th Battalion.

George embarked with the Battalion from Fremantle on the 6th of June 1916. On the 25th of June 1916, whilst on his way to England, he found himself in trouble for “Breaking Ship” (AWL). His punishment was no leave and all guards and fatigues for the remainder of the voyage. He disembarked at Plymouth on the 21st of July 1916 and proceeded overseas to France on the 25th of November 1916.

On the 4th of December 1916 he was admitted to hospital (VD) and returned to his Battalion on the 6th of January 1917. George was on strength with the Battalion throughout the remainder of 1917 until he was admitted to hospital on the 19th of August 1918. He would have seen action at Messines, Broodseinde and Passchendaele in 1917 and Hamel and Amiens in 1918. (He was one of the few from the Battalion not to be wounded by the end of these battles). He returned to Australia on the 1st of June 1919.
