Ian Rhodes was born on the 30th of November 1946 in Manchester, England. He entered National Service on the 19th of April 1967 and after training at Puckapunyal with the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, he served in South Vietnam with the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.
Ian was allocated service number 3790357 and served as a Rifleman in 12 Platoon, D Company, 4RAR from the 21st of May 1968 – 18th of March 1969. Ian was Wounded in Action (GSW and Claymore wounds) on the 8th of October 1968 when his platoon was ambushed by an unknown number of VC.
Following the contact, a small camp consisting of two bunkers and fighting pits was found in the area. The Australian casualties were 2 x KIA and 6 X WIA. For his actions under fire, the Platoon stretcher bearer Dick Foster, was Mentioned in Despatches.
