Charles Winzar was born on the 1st of July 1893 in Dorchester, England. On the 8th of March 1911, he departed Bristol, UK on the “Royal Edward” for Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Charles was working as a Waiter at the Bowles Restaurant before enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on the 12th of April 1915. Charles was initially allocated service number A4242 which was officially changed to 404242. On the 17th of July 1915, Charles was taken on strength in “C” Company, with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalion.
Charles was with the Battalion when he Wounded in Action at Mount Sorrel on the 13th of June 1916. He transferred to the Canadian Casualty Assistance Centre, where he recovered from his wounds, until the 9th of February 1917. On the 24th of February 1917 he transferred to the 5th Canadian Railway Battalion, where he served until his death.
Charles died in Hospital, after a two week battle with dysentery, on the 9th of October 1918. He now rests in the Aire Communal Cemetery, France.
