    Record of Service:

     

    Alan Roberts was born about 1897 in Kilkenny, Ireland. On the 15th of January 1914 he emigrated to Australia and was working as a Farm Hand in Sydney when he joined the A.I.F on the 22nd of March 1915. Alan was allocated service number 979 and was an original member of C Company, 20th Battalion.

     

    Alan embarked with the battalion from Sydney on the 25th of June 1915 and proceeded to join the MEF at Gallipoli on the 16th of August 1915. On the 3rd of December 1915 he was admitted to hospital suffering from Dysentery. He returned to his battalion on the 5th of February 1916 and proceeded to join the BEF in France on the 25th of March 1916.

     

    On the 9th of November 1916 Alan was Wounded in Action (GSW Lt Side/Chest). Recovering from his wounds Alan returned to his battalion on the 13th of March 1917 where he served until, he was Killed in Action in Belgium on the 20th of September 1917. At the time the 20th Battalion was involved in the Third Battle of Ypres and the battle around Menin Road.

     

    He now rests in the Hooge Crater Cemetery, Zillebeke, Belgium.
